DROITWICH Spa High School under-13 Girls’ football team narrowly missed out silverware after claiming the runners-up spot at the Worcestershire County Football Finals.
After a great season, the Spa girls were unfortunate not to take first place at the tournament held at South Bromsgrove High School as Ridgeway pipped them to the title by virtue of goal difference.
Spa started the competition slowly with a 1-0 defeat to Bredon Hill thanks to a 12th minute goal from Ellie-Mae Mason, however, the girls came out stronger in their second match against Hanley Castle – winning 3-0.
Layla Hart netted twice with Rebecca Finch adding the third.
Their victory set up a tough match against Ridgeway who had won both of their opening fixtures and in a tightly-contested battle, the two schools shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Finch opened the scoring for Spa before the eventual champions drew level just two minutes later.
With Ridgeway scoring seven goals against Bredon, Spa had a tough task to win but fell just three goals short of being crowned county champions as they could only defeat Nunnery Wood 4-0.
A spokesman for Droitwich Spa High School said: “Despite finishing as runners-up, it was a great performance to go out on and the girls got a lot out of the tournament and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
