Droitwich Spa Ladies crush Coleshill to go top

DROITWICH Spa Ladies moved to the summit of the West Midlands Regional League Division One (South) table following a crushing 9-0 victory over newly-promoted Coleshill Town Ladies.

Spa went into the fixture following an opening day 1-0 victory over Coventry Development Ladies and it was clear from the outset on Sunday that Droitwich had significantly greater technical ability than their opponents.

They were able to create several chances before Ellie Gerhold opened the scoring on 19 minutes.

A long ball forward by Lindsey Jones was allowed to bounce by the Coleshill defenders, allowing Gerhold to beat the advancing keeper and head into an empty net.

Gerhold then added her second before Charlotte Criddle opened her Spa account five minutes before the break.

Although the game was already over as a contest, Spa’s dominance of the first half was eclipsed in the second half as they added a further six goals to their tally.

Criddle bagged her second of the game just five minutes into the second half direct from a free-kick, the first of four goals in the space of 18 minutes.

Gerhold then completed her hat-trick before adding a fourth to make it 6-0 followed by Beth Roberts netting the seventh.

Charleigh Stanaway grabbed the eighth after completing a wonderful move before April Polden rounded off the scoring.

Manager Ian Fry said: “Although we dominated throughout and went into the break three goals to the good, I felt our performance in that first period lacked precision and fluency.

“We addressed that at half time and in the second period the girls were genuinely impressive. I could not be more pleased with the way we have started our season.

“Ten unanswered goals is testament to how well all my players have played. Unfortunately, given how well we’ve been playing, we have next weekend off.”

Spa return to league action on Sunday, September 25 when they entertain Kenilworth Town (2pm KO).
