Droitwich Spa Ladies march on

DROITWICH Spa Ladies made it eight wins in their last 10 outings at the weekend with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rubery Ladies.

Goals from Ellie Gerhold, April Polden and Hannah Maiden secured the victory for Spa, consolidating their third place position in the West Midlands Regional League Division One South.

Spa took the lead inside five minutes as Gerhold netted her 14th goal of the season with an unstoppable shot past the Rubery keeper.

Six minutes later, Spa doubled their lead as Polden raced onto a throughball from Sarah Parkinson-Mills before bravely sliding in to beat the advancing Rubery keeper.

After 25 minutes, Spa continued to dominate and added a third goal to their tally when Maiden slotted home after capitalising on a poor defensive clearance.

Spa were guilty of wasting further chances towards the end of the first half and from one missed opportunity, Rubery countered and won a corner, from which they reduced the arrears.

Following the interval, despite creating several chances, Spa failed to increase their lead, allowing Rubery to get a stronghold on the game.

In the 65th minute, Rubery made it 3-2 to set up a nervy final 25 minutes for Spa.

Some solid Droitwich defending for the remainder of the game kept the score at 3-2, including a miraculous goal line clearance to ensure Spa walked away with all three points.

Droitwich manager Ian Fry said: “Our first half display was exceptional. We were up against a strong opposition today and my players played some superb football.

“As always my girls worked incredibly hard and were rewarded with a very good result.

“We remain well placed to challenge for the league title over the remaining weeks of the season.”
