Droitwich Spa Ladies Seconds edged out by Harborne

DROITWICH Spa Ladies Seconds were narrowly defeated 3-2 in a pre-season friendly against Harborne.

Initially the game was fought in the middle of the park with both sides cancelling each other out as Spa’s new players began to bed in.

However, Harborne’s quicker approach play meant they opened the scoring from a penalty corner after just seven minutes.

Despite going behind, Droitwich made use of their greater pace and determination with Anna Weston and Gabrielle Prendiville using their speed to push the defence back.

Following a quick attack down the right, the ball flew across the edge of the area where Weston was on hand to sweep the ball home from close range.

Harborne began to find it difficult to hold the Droitwich surge and Lucy Hine found herself in some space before striking a low and hard shot from the right edge of the circle which found the opposite corner.

The second half was a more even affair as the home side sat back to try and catch Harborne on the break with Prendiville and Weston wasting guilt-edge opportunities to further extend Spa’s 2-1 lead.

Harborne capitalised on those missed chances with two opportunistic strikes to take a 3-2 lead.

Naomi Mountford in goal saved Spa from further blushes as Harborne looked to build on their advantage before the full-time whistle.
