DROITWICH Spa Men’s Firsts slumped to a 4-0 defeat to Redditch in their Midlands Regional League West Midlands One opener.

Redditch started the more composed as they moved the ball around quickly with their forwards pressing high up the pitch.

And this pressure forced Spa into an early mistake, allowing the hosts to get their first shot on goal which was scuffed wide.

Following this, the visitors started to exert some pressure of their own and created several chances, particularly down the right with David Purchase looking fruitful.

Matthew Lee had another good chance to open his account as he burst down the middle only to see his shot saved.

However, Spa’s hard work was undone in the dying moments of the first half was Redditch won a penalty corner which was slotted home into George Robertshaw’s right corner.

After the break, Redditch looked to exert their dominance and it told as they scored three quick-fire goals to race from close range to race into a 4-0 lead.

And Spa had Robertshaw to thank as he pulled off further good saves to prevent Redditch from extended their already unassailable lead.

Head coach Simon Baines said: “This match up is always going to be a difficult encounter but I was pleased with how the team is beginning to come together as it is a new look side, with youngsters who have pushed through the clubs ranks which provides competition for places and helps to drive the club forward.

“The first half proved how that the team can play composed hockey and is building up on from the performance against Pershore last week.

“Next time I will be looking at the team performing for the whole of the match and turning the pressure into goals which is being helped with settled selection and getting the first win on the board.”

Spa entertain Yardley on Saturday (2pm start).

In the reverse Seconds fixture in West Midlands Two, Spa succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

Redditch raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half but it could have been more if it had not have been for numerous saves from Marty Davies to keep Spa in the contest.

After the break, Spa came out more aggressive and weer unlucky not to find the net and put Redditch under further pressure.

Davies again prevented further Redditch goals in a man-of-the-match display.

Spa will look for their first three points of the season on Saturday when they travel to Solihull Blossomfield (2pm start).
