FOOTBALL - Droitwich Spa announce trio of new signings ahead of season opener

DROITWICH Spa have announced three new signings ahead of the start of the 2023/24 Midland Football League Division One season this weekend.

Midfielder James Halsall and defenders Joe Heywood and Niall Doherty have bolstered Andy Crowther’s squad ahead of the season opener.

Halsall returns to Spa after a six-year absence after initially departing for Pershore Town before taking a break from Saturday football.

Halsall said: “It’s a delight to sign for my hometown club. I’ve worked really hard over the last couple of months to get to where I am personally.

“It’s been a good pre-season throughout the whole squad, with some great results and now I am raring to go for the season to start, and I hope we can push for promotion with this great squad.”

The 27-year-old made close to 50 appearances in his first spell with the Saltmen after joining from Worcester City’s academy.

Young defender Heywood featured for Bromyard Town either side of a spell at Bewdley Town last season, making eight appearances for both clubs.

The 21-year-old also spent time with Evesham United.

Heywood said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for my hometown club. From the first training session I knew it was where I wanted to play my football.”

Fellow defender Doherty spent last season with Worcester City Reserves where he made six appearances as City finished as league runners-up.

The 21-year-old can play at left back or centre back.

Doherty said: “I’m really looking forward to being involved in such a great set up.

“The coaching staff and players have made me feel extremely welcome and I’m hoping to contribute as much as I can to a successful season ahead.”
