DROITWICH Spa beat higher-division Westfields 2-0 to reach the fourth round of the Marsh Challenge Cup.
Second-half goals from Alex Dugmore and Nathan Binner sealed Spa’s place in the next round of the competition at the King George Playing Fields.
Andy Crowther’s side showed their class to overcome Westfields who play one level above Spa in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
Spa felt they should have had an early penalty when Dugmore took the ball around Westfields goalkeeper Shay Sterry and appeared to bring down the Saltmen striker.
However, the referee waved away the home side’s protests.
In a half of few chances, Josh Hurdman forced Sterry into a fine save before the break with an effort from close range.
Westfields responded with a chance of their own as Dan Stoneman beat Dom Rogerson to a loose ball but somehow shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
And the visitors went close again early in the second period as Stoneman saw his powerful effort come back off the crossbar.
Spa took control of the game thereafter and broke the deadlock on 56 minutes when Dugmore fired Hurdman’s low cross into the net after Binner produced a superb crossfield pass at the start of the move.
And Binner doubled the home side’s lead on 72 minutes with a volley into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area after Westfields could only clear another Hurdman cross into the midfielder’s path.
Spa will face current Premier Division leaders Hartpury University in the next round of the competition with a date for the fixture to be announced in due course.
Droitwich host Southam United on Saturday, February 15 with kick-off at 3pm at the King George Playing Fields.
