CAPTAIN James Lemon scored the winner as Droitwich Spa claimed a crucial 3-2 victory away at play-off hopefuls Cradley Town.

Lemon extended Spa’s lead in the second half after strikes from Cory Rudd and Connor Collins before the break at Beeches View.

The result means Droitwich sit fourth in the Midland Football League Division One table, two points behind Allscott Heath in second with two games in-hand.

Cradley dominated the opening exchanges as Spa goalkeeper Ollie Sayer parried an early set-piece before the home side had a goal ruled out for offside.

However, with their first attack, Lemon raced clear of the Cradley defence only for home goalkeeper Nana Frimpong to foul the Spa captain for which he received a yellow card.

And just two minutes later the Saltmen broke the deadlock when Rudd powered a header past Frimpong into the bottom corner from Nathan Binner’s deep cross against the run of play.

Cradley levelled the game on 23 minutes when a corner from the left ricocheted off Alex Dugmore and past a helpless Sayer in the Spa net.

However, the game turned on its head again on 34 minutes when Tilley broke into the penalty area and drew a foul from Darren Whitley as Collins stepped up to score the resulting penalty.

Sayer then saved Kane Harrold’s low effort before Frimpong made an even better one-handed stop at the other end to deny Lemon from close range.

The visitors remained on top after the break and stretched their lead on the hour mark when Lemon rounded Frimpong and finished into an empty net from Collins’ flick-on.

Cradley reduced the deficit three minutes from time as Umaru Saho beat the offside trap and produced a clinical finish into the bottom corner.

However, Andy Crowther’s side held firm to claim an important three points and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Droitwich are next in action at home to Allscott Heath on Tuesday, March 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the King George Playing Fields.
