DROITWICH Spa exited the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup at the second round stage after suffering a 4-2 defeat against higher-division Pershore Town.

Goals from Perry Moss and Cory Rudd proved in vain for the Saltmen at the Community Stadium.

Pershore play one level above Droitwich in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Spa made the worst possible start as Pershore broke the deadlock after just two minutes as Nathan Benson’s first time shot deflected past Dom Rogerson in the Droitwich goal.

However, the visitors equalised on 11 minutes when Moss tapped the ball into an empty net following a quick counter attack.

Pershore reclaimed the lead on the half-hour mark as Bailey Fuller finished on the rebound after Rogerson could only parry Zaq Hussain’s initial effort into the scorer’s path.

And the Plums struck again five minutes later when Hussain controlled Fuller’s lofted ball down the right before firing home from close range.

Pershore all but sealed their place in the next round on 72 minutes as Hussain curled a free-kick around the wall and into the net despite the best efforts of Rogerson.

The Saltmen reduced the deficit three minutes later when Rudd finished from close range but it proved too little, too late.

Droitwich are next in action against Ludlow Town on Saturday, January 25 with kick-off at 3pm at Bromfield Road.
