DROITWICH Spa have signed two experienced players as manager Andy Crowther begins to shape his squad for the 2024/25 season.

The Saltmen have confirmed the return of defender Jamie Sauntson from Hereford Pegasus after he initially joined Spa on dual registration towards the end of last season.

The 31-year-old has now made the move permanent after impressing in the Spa defence as Droitwich reached the Midland Football League Division One play-off final.

Sauntson said: “I came in to this league several years ago with Malvern, won promotion and then had a few years at Step Five, so I know exactly what it’s about.

“For me in the Hellenic League the sides try to play more football, and it’s less physical than the Midland League.

“We have some great ability here at Droitwich, I belive that we have what it takes to push for promotion and I can’t wait to get started.”

Crowther added: “Jay was on my radar last season and eventually signed up near the end of the campaign and played a handful of games.

“To be able to get this signature over the line now is a testament to show how far the club and squad has gone.

“Jay will add valuable experience on and off the pitch, and is a natural leader.”

Sauntson started his career in Cheltenham Town’s academy before going on to play for Evesham United, Westfields, Malvern Town and Worcester Raiders.

He won promotion to Step Five with Malvern alongside fellow new signing Matt Fusco who has also made the move to Droitwich ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Fusco arrives from Malmesbury Victoria where he made 38 appearances last season and helped his former side win the Hellenic League Division One play-off final last term.

The 29-year-old made over 100 appearances for Malmesbury and can play in midfield or at full-back.

Fusco said: “After speaking to Andy Crowther and knowing the aspirations that the club has for the future, I feel that with the experiences I’ve had and knowing what it takes for promotion from this league, I can really help to push the club and the lads on to get there in any way that I can.

“I’ve been really impressed with the facilities here. I can see the club is progressing in the right direction and everyone is on the same wavelength and I want to be a part of that.”

Crowther added: “Matt is a player who brings with him a lot of experience at this level and he will be a valuable member of the squad.

“He is versatile and has the great ability to play in many positions, he will bring his energy and experience to this ever evolving squad.”
