FOOTBALL - Saltmen ease to victory at Haughmond

DROITWICH Spa secured a comprehensive 4-0 win at Haughmond to extend their unbeaten run to six matches.

James Lemon, Ollie Thompson, Haydn Morris and Matty Hunt were all on target for Spa who cruised to victory with two goals in either half at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

The result leaves Spa in sixth place in the Midland Football League Division One table.

In what was the first ever meeting between the two sides, Spa dominated the early proceedings before Lemon stabbed home Perry Moss’ cross on 22 minutes.

That came after Lemon, Jack Davies and Cory Rudd had all flashed shots wide of Sam Jones’s goal.

Haughmond’s Liam Taylor was then fortunate not to be sent off after he hauled Lemon to the ground with the striker through on goal.

The home side enjoyed a good spell of possession thereafter with Spa happy to soak up the pressure with Daniel Churm going closest when he cleared the crossbar.

And Droitwich doubled their lead against the run of play as Thompson netted his first goal on his return from injury after he beat the offside trap and raced clear before chipping the ball over Jones from the edge of the penalty area.

Haughmond’s best chance fell to substitute Nick Tanco who headed over from a great position as the home side failed to force league debutant Dom Rogerson into a meaningful save all afternoon.

Spa should have put the game to bed when substitute Ben Cowlishaw somehow hit the woodwork from a few yards out from Moss’s low cross.

However, some inspired substitutions from manager Andy Crowther paid dividends as Morris wrapped up the win with a close range finish on the turn.

And fellow sub Hunt scored his first goal since returning to the club with a fine header from the edge of the penalty area from Morris’s corner.

Droitwich are next in action away at OJM Black Country TONIGHT (Tuesday, November 1) with kick-off at 7.45pm at Lye Town’s Sports Ground.
