DROITWICH Spa moved back into the play-off places despite having surrendered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw against 10-man Wolverhampton Sporting.

The Saltmen raced into an early lead courtesy of goals from James Lemon and Sam Hurdman only for Sporting to score twice with 10-men and leave Spa stunned at Pride Park.

And the result means Droitwich sit fifth in the Midland Football League Division One table, ahead of Bilston Town on goal difference although Andy Crowther’s side have two games in hand.

The visitors opened the scoring on 13 minutes through Lemon’s 19th goal of the season before Hurdman produced a fine finish from the edge of the penalty area just five minutes later.

Dom Rogerson did well to keep out Stanley Mugisha’s long range effort at the other end before Hurdman and Lemon were denied by Sporting goalkeeper Aidan Cox and Connor Collins saw an effort cleared off the line.

And Spa were further boosted when Sporting’s Tom Harley was sent off for a lunge early in the second period.

However, substitutes Josh Hurdman and Connor Baker both missed gilt-edged chances as the latter inexplicably fired over with the goal at his mercy.

And the Saltmen were made to rue those missed chances when Henry Eze headed in at the back post to reduce the deficit before Daud Ahmed beat the offside trap and Rogerson to level the game.

Droitwich are next in action at home to Wednesfield on Saturday, March 25 with kick-off at 3pm at the King George Playing Fields.
