FOOTBALL - Saltmen upstage Bewdley in League Cup thriller

DROITWICH Spa upstaged Bewdley Town to advance in the Midland Football League Cup with a 3-2 victory despite fielding a much-changed side.

Andy Crowther rotated his squad to great effect as Perry Moss, Charlie Tilley and Sam Hurdman all struck to secure an impressive win against a team who play one league above in the Midland Premier Division.

Spa caused Bewdley all sorts of problems and took the lead when Moss planted a well-placed header into the net from Jack Brighton’s pinpoint cross.

And Droitwich deservedly doubled their lead when Tilley’s low drive proved too powerful for Bewdley goalkeeper Haydn Whitcombe who was unable to keep the shot out as the ball trickled over the line.

Bewdley halved the deficit early in the second half when Callum Gillies stabbed the ball home after Spa’s debutant keeper Dom Rogerson made a fine initial save.

However, the Saltmen were quick to restore their two-goal advantage when Hurdman finished from Ollie Thompson’s low cross to score on his first competitive start for the club.

Bewdley’s Ben Worthington struck five minutes from time to set up a nervy finish but Spa held firm to book a date with Studley in the next round.

Droitwich are next in action away at Haughmond on Saturday, October 29 with kick-off at 3pm at Shrewsbury Sports Village.
