FOOTBALL - Spa boss Crowther "confident" ahead of Gornal clash

DROITWICH Spa boss Andy Crowther is feeling “confident” ahead of his side’s clash with league leaders Gornal Athletic in the West Midlands (Regional) League Division One this weekend.

Both Droitwich and Gornal are unbeaten after 10 matches this season – although Gornal are four points clear at the top with Spa having drawn two more games than their opponents.

An exciting clash is in store at Garden Walk Stadium and Crowther is preparing his players as he would for any other league game ahead of the crunch match.

Crowther said: “We’re quite confident, I’m treating it as I would any other game, we’re both unbeaten.

“There’s a bit of a gap to third place – I think it will be us and Gornal who will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

“If they beat us they can go seven points clear – which is quite a big gap even though it’s early in the season.

“We have to go there, be positive and try and get the three points.”

The Saltmen secured an impressive 5-1 win at home to AFC Bentley in their last outing with Connor Baker scoring a hat-trick from the bench to add to efforts from Perry Moss and Connor Collins.

That means Spa have scored a whopping 11 goals in their last two matches and Crowther was delighted for Baker who only made the step up from the youth team this summer.

He added: “Connor Baker came to the first-team from the under-18’s and he’s matured a lot in pre-season and the games we’ve called upon him.

“He’s doing very well and we’re very happy that we has able to get his first senior hat-trick.

“We’re starting to shore up at the back, we were shipping on average two goals a game.

“It could have been double figures, it seems like we miss the easy chances and score the hard ones.

“Three points is the main thing and another five goals so I’m very happy.”

Droitwich’s match with Gornal takes place on Saturday, October 16 with kick-off at 3pm.
