FOOTBALL - Spa come from behind to beat Chelmsley

OLLIE Thompson inspired Droitwich Spa to a come from behind 3-1 win against Chelmsley Town as the Saltmen secured a fourth successive victory.

Thompson came off the bench to haul Droitwich level before Alex Dugmore and Matt Hunt both struck to complete the turnaround at the King George Playing Fields.

The result means Droitwich sit sixth in the Midland Football League Division One table just three points behind Bilston Town with four games in hand.

Spa made a flying start, without scoring, as Andy Crowther’s side hit the woodwork before Perry Moss was denied by Chelmsley captain Aidan Doherty with the goal at his mercy.

Chelmsley threatened at the other end as Mark Rose shot over when well-placed before Dom Rogerson tipped Sam Jeeves’ effort over the crossbar.

However, the visitors took the lead when Rose headed in from close range on 35 minutes to stun the Saltmen before Dugmore felt he should have had a penalty when he was brought down by Ryan Coley.

Droitwich responded in the second half as Chelmsley goalkeeper Tom Allsopp tipped James Lemon’s shot over before denying Moss when through on goal.

The home side eventually drew level when sub Thompson was in the right place at the right time to stab home from a yard out after Jack Brighton’s corner was headed down into his path.

And Thompson then won the free-kick from which Droitwich scored the winner as Dugmore’s bullet header went in off the post with the defender left unmarked with 15 minutes left to play.

Dugmore’s defensive partner Hunt sealed the points late on when his deft header found the net to extend Spa’s winning run to four matches in all competitions.

Droitwich are next in action away at play-off rivals OJM Black Country on Tuesday, February 28 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Lye Town’s Sports Ground.
