FOOTBALL - Spa return to winning ways at Nuneaton Griff

Droitwich Editorial 17th Mar, 2023   0

DROITWICH Spa returned to winning ways with an impressive 3-2 victory away at Nuneaton Griff as the Saltmen came from behind to claim a crucial three points.

Scott Braiden-Smith and Connor Collins put Spa ahead at the break before James Lemon sealed the points in the second half at Pingles Stadium.

The result means Droitwich sit sixth in the Midland Football League Division One table, just three points behind OJM Black Country in fourth with a game in hand.

Nuneaton took the lead on six minutes when Toby Bartram made the most of an advantage played by the referee to finish well from a tight angle.

However, Spa equalised on 14 minutes when Braiden-Smith finished on the turn from eight-yards out after Jack Brighton’s free-kick fell kindly into his path.

And Droitwich completed the turnaround just two minutes later when Perry Moos was fouled in the penalty area and Collins converted from the spot to score his first goal in five matches.

Alex Dugmore, Lemon and Moss all went close to extending Spa’s lead as both teams tried to play passing football in strong winds and heavy rain.

Luke Molloy fired narrowly wide at the start of the second period before Lemon tapped in from close range after tireless work from Brighton to put the Saltmen in command.

And Moss almost added a fourth after he beat the offside trap and dragged an effort wide before Griff pulled a goal back courtesy of Liam Cross’s header from Jared Bradshaw’s corner.

Andy Crowther’s side were content to sit back and protect their narrow lead as Dom Rogerson made two superb saves, including one in injury time. to preserve the points.

Droitwich are next in action at home to Haughmond on Saturday, March 18 with kick-off at 3pm at the King George Playing Fields.
