FOOTBALL - Spa stay third with Heath Hayes win

JOSH Hurdman’s first senior goal helped Droitwich Spa stretch their unbeaten run to seven matches with a vital 2-1 win away at Heath Hayes to remain third in the table.

Hurdman came off the bench to score what proved to be the winner in the second period after Perry Moss opened the scoring in the first half at the Coppice Colliery Ground.

The result means the Saltmen stay third in the Midland Football League Division One table.

Andy Crowther’s side spurned a glorious chance to take the lead on seven minutes when James Lemon was brought down in the box only for Connor Collins to see his spot kick saved by Kieran Hart.

However, Spa broke the deadlock on 15 minutes when Moss tapped the ball into an empty net after Collins’ perfect cross left Hart stranded.

And the visitors doubled their lead just past the hour mark as substitute Hurdman netted his first goal of the season from close range after Moss produced a brilliant low cross.

The home side halved the deficit late on as Nicholas Wellecomme raced clear and emphatically fired past Dom Rogerson.

And the Spa keeper made a superb late save from Connor Ryan, with the ball destined for the top-right corner, to preserve the points.

Droitwich host Heath Hayes on Saturday, April 8 with kick-off at 3pm at the King George Playing Fields before Spa travel to Bilston Town on Easter Monday (April 10) with kick-off at 3pm at Queen Street.
