Droitwich Spa Men (thirds) 2 Bromgrove (thirds) 1

DROITWICH continued to carry an attacking threat as they won the local derby against Bromsgrove 2-1 and maintain their winning streak.

Spa started brightly early with Zak Alsop providing a threat as he penetrated the defensive line after surging wing play from Peter Sankey but finished wide after a centre from the right.

At times during the first half Spa were on the back foot as ‘Grove pushed the home side back with Aerial passes and good forwards movement but this was nullified as the Droitwich back three marked the attackers out of the game. Spa young keeper Matthew Knowles stopped one low shot in the first half with his stick, but soon after the away side took the lead from a penalty corner.

Droitwich regained their composure and pushed Bromsgrove back as Liam Hine commanded the middle of the park with excellent passes turning Bromsgrove around. Peter Sankey crossed from the right which found Liam Hine at the top of the circle who coolly slotted the ball home to draw the home side level.

In the second half Spa were indebted to Matthew Knowles smart saves with his sticks and commanding kicks, as Bromsgrove played on the break. Bromsgrove had the ball in the back Droitwich net but it was ruled out as from the free hit as Bromsgrove players were not 5m when the hit was taken. With ten minutes to go a quickly taken free hit set Spa’s pacey winger Peter Sankey free down the right who cut the ball back to Mathew Mason to sweep home for the winner.

Spa take on Worcester fifths away at Nunnery Wood tomorrow with a 1.30pm start.

Droitwich Spa Ladies 5 vs 0 Kings Heath Pickwick

Droitwich Ladies 1s set there stall out for the remainder of the season with an accomplished 5-0 home win against Kings Heath Pickwick.

Droitwich played well throughout the match with accurate, quick passing pulling the opposition’s defence all over the place. After a number of great saves the Kings Heath goal was finally penetrated by Droitwich with a well worked goal from open play which was put home by left forward, Jasmine Williams. Droitwich’s open play, speedy passes and great teamwork proved too much for the opposition throughout the second half with several penalty corners being won. Droitwich were able to capitalise on many of these with both Lucy Hine and Louise Warrilow scoring two each from tactical, set play pieces.

“This excellent team performance should bode well for the forthcoming season, and the fact that we kept a clean sheet was really impressive and something that is important if we want to get promotion this season.” said Lorna Davidson.

Droitwich entertain Redditch at home tomorrow with a 12pm start.

Redditch 6 Droitwich Ladies (seconds) 1

Droitwich Ladies 2s player Redditch away in an absorbing encounter which finished 6-1 to the homeside in the latest Worcestershire Division 3 encounter.

The game started slowly, with both sides feeling their way into the game. The game burst into life with three goals in two first half minutes. Redditched opened the scoring after 15 minutes as Redditch finished from close range. Doitwich were stung into life and Jenny Copson immediately struck back with a skilful run and finish from the halfway line as Redditch backed off her. But the home side scored the goal ahead goal less than a minute later. Droitwich were caught out once more before half time despite the excellent counterattacking and defensive work put in by Jenny and Claire Copson in the middle of the park.

After the break, Droitwich continued to battle and look dangerous on the break, but Redditch strength told in the last ten minutes as Spa conceded another three goals.

Droitwich travel to Stourport tomorrow, 12pm push back.
