MORE THAN one hundred people turned up at Droitwich Spa Tennis Club to watch the culmination of the Club Championships which had been running throughout the summer.
With a record entry this year across classes from juniors to over-60s, some excellent tennis was played across the board watched by friends, family and other members of the club.
The pick of the bunch was undoubtedly the final of the under-18 boys singles between Evan Goss and James Stanford.
More than three hours of epic tennis passed, watched by open mouthed spectators, before Goss finally came out on top in a three-set battle.
Close behind was another classic in the mixed doubles with Mark Jones and Lauren Whiteman holding on for a 7-6, 7-6 win over Scott Howell and Dee Smith to become club champions.
This year’s singles champions were Lee Cowan and Whiteman. Lee then set a small piece of club history partnering 12-year-old Scott Mortimer in the final of the men’s doubles – the first time such a young player had reached this stage.
However, in another three-set epic, Cowan and Mortimer lost out the stronger pairing of James Nam and Howell.
A spokesperson for the club said: “Congratulations must go to all of the finalists who played their part in a brilliant day which finishes off the summer season adding to what has been an unbelievably successful year for the club.”
