Oliver: Droitwich back on course for promotion

DROITWICH Spa are back on course for gaining promotion this season according to joint-boss Wayne Oliver following Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Rostance Edwards.

In front of a crowd of 196, and the Big Centre TV cameras, the Saltmen bounced-back from the 2-1 defeat at Chelmsley Town with an impressive victory over the Midland League Division Two leaders.

James Lemon, Macaulay Finch and Mark Burrows got on the scoresheet in a comprehensive victory that moved the Saltmen to within one point of the top two.

And for Oliver, the performance from the weekend has boosted his hopes of clinching promotion.

“It was a massive win for us, we needed the three points to keep us in the mix,” he said.

“If we had lost on Saturday I firmly believe that was the end of our dreams of going up.

“The performance against Rostance was the total opposite of the week before, we just turned up.

“I shuffled the pack a little bit and all the players put in a decent shift and deserved to win.”

Spa’s next game sees them make the trip to Austrey Rangers tomorrow (Saturday) looking to avenge the 1-1 draw between the two sides back in October.

Nick Seabourne had given the Saltmen a 1-0 half-time lead on the afternoon but a strike from Luke Pocklington managed to salvage a point for Rangers.

This time around, Oliver expects another tough game but maintains a victory is paramount.

“We cannot afford to lose any more games, it’s that simple,” he added.

“Austrey managed to hold us to a draw last time out and it will be another tough game this weekend but we have to go out there and get the points again.

“There is no room for error in our quest for a top two finish.”

Oliver also hopes that fans get out in force once again following their 200-shy crowd at the King George Playing Fields against Rostance Edwards.

He added: “I am proud as punch to have seen so many people come to our game last weekend.

“Those that turned up made everything come together nicely and the support was absolutely brilliant.

“The crowd, the noise, the atmosphere, it was just perfect.

“Everybody at the club is overwhelmed by the support we have had but we hope the fans can come out in force more once again.”
