Oliver: Expect freak results in the latter stages of the campaign

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver says there will be some freak results going into the latter stages of the season which could have a huge impact on who wins the league.

The Saltmen were out of action at the weekend after their Midland League Division One clash against second placed Rostance Edwards was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

And with all other league games at the weekend postponed, it is expected there will be a busy fixture list going into the final months of the campaign.

Oliver said: “You have to remember quite a lot of the players in the division play for their respective Sunday league sides.

“With the fixtures building up and teams set to play in midweek, players will be deciding if they want to play Saturday and Sunday football.

“This will throw up some freak results and I have always said that until the last ball is kicked on the last day of the season, that is when the title will be decided.

“Everybody from now and up until the end of the season is going to be playing league and cup games so things will change.

“I would not read too much into the table at the moment.”

Spa will hope to get some footballing action this Saturday (February 13) as they make the trip to Barnt Green Spartak in the quarter-finals of the Presidents Cup.

The last meeting between the two sides came just two weeks ago in the league as relegation threatened Spartak held the Saltmen to a 1-1 draw at the King George Playing Fields.

Spa had taken the lead through James Lemon before Nathan Greaves netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

The Saltmen thought they’d won it five minutes from the end but James Ward’s ‘goal’ was disallowed for a foul in the box.

And for Oliver, he told the Standard that his players need to start taking their chances if they hope to progress into the semi-finals.

“We have to be more ruthless this time,” he said. “We just need to be clinical with our finishing.

“I’m not saying the game against Barnt Green was bad but we should have killed the game off in the first half.

“You have to take the chances as they come otherwise you can slip up.”
