DROITWICH SPA joint-manager Wayne Oliver is pleased to see his side managed to walk away with silverware this season despite missing out on promotion.
On Saturday, Spa took on West Midlands (Regional) League outfit Worcester Raiders in the final of the Worcestershire Junior Cup and managed to secure a 3-2 victory courtesy of a James Lemon penalty in the eighth minute of injury time.
Spa had taken the lead in the 20th minute through Nick Seabourne before Dale Goddard levelled 20 minutes from the end. Lemon restored Spa’s advantage in the 86th minute only to see Anthony Smith equalise in the sixth minute of injury time.
Just two minutes later Haydn Morris was brought down in the area and up stepped Lemon to secure silverware for Oliver’s side.
“We should have won the game when we went 2-1 up but Raiders showed great desire to get back into the game,” Oliver said.
“We created so many chances in the first half to kill the game off but the second half was a totally different story.
“Raiders looked like they wanted it a whole lot more than us but we got a bit of luck and credit to Lemon for taking the penalty right at the very end – I would have been disappointed it he missed it.
“I’m pleased we’ve got silverware but cup progress will be something we will look to improve upon next season.”
Spa return to league action on Saturday where they take on Rostance Edwards in their final Midland League Division Two fixture of the season.
Oliver’s side sit fourth in the table and know a victory would secure third place should Paget Rangers lose to league champions elect Alvis Sporting Club at the weekend.
“It would be nice to end the season with a victory but Rostance will be looking to beat us and move level on points with us,” Oliver added.
“It’s been a generally pleasing season for us but we will see what happens on Saturday.”
Spa then complete their season on Monday night as they take on Alvis in the final of the Presidents Cup which is being held at New Mill lane, the home of Coton Green.
The two sides have met three times this season, with Alvis coming out on top in all of those, but Oliver insists there’s no reason as to why his side can’t clinch their second cup of the campaign.
“We’re massive underdogs going into Monday’s game as Alvis have got a really good, strong squad,” he said.
“It would be nice to win the Presidents Cup so we will give it our best shot and see what transpires.
“I’m hoping we play the full 90 minutes like how we played the first half against Worcester Raiders.”
