Pressure is all on Highgate - Smith

MANAGER Paul Smith has admitted it’s Highgate United’s ‘title for the taking’ as they remain six points clear of closest rivals Bromsgrove Sporting.

But he insisted his side will continue to pile the pressure on the Midland Football League Division One leaders and stressed ‘strangers things have happened in football’.

Highgate need just four points from their final two games to clinch promotion and deny the Roulsers the chance of snatching the title from them on the final day of the season.

Smith told The Standard it was difficult not to see United beating Stafford Town at home tomorrow (Saturday), but he believes Coventry Copsewood, who face Highgate on Tuesday night, are capable of causing an upset.

“We are doing everything we can towards the back end of the season to try and catch them,” he said.

“All we can hope for is that they have a slip up.

“They have got a home game against Stafford which you would expect them to get three points, but Copsewood is a tough place to go.

“The way Highgate are playing they should win both games, so we are realistic, but stranger things have happened in football.

“We will just keep doing our bit and hope Stafford or Copsewood can do us a favour.”

Bromsgrove are currently on a seven match winning, but Smith has urged his players to guard against complacency when they travel to Racing Club Warwick tomorrow (Saturday).

“Highgate are bound to be looking at us and I am sure they will be over the moon if we dropped some points,” he added.

“They are under pressure at the minute because it is theirs to lose.

“Racing Club are struggling at the bottom of the league, but they have got a new manager who has come in and started to pick them up a bit. so complacency is the big word for Saturday.

“It is vitally important we don’t slip up on Saturday, which will take it to the Tuesday night.”
