Relegation for Droitwich Spa but promotion joy for the Seconds

RAIN ensured relegation from Worcestershire County League Division One for Droitwich Spa at the weekend.

However, the Seconds dodged the showers to clinch promotion from Division Two Second XI.

Only 6.2 overs were possible at Hagley for the Firsts before a downpour curtailed proceedings and confirmed Droitwich’s drop to Division Two.

Ash Fearnall, who has scored more than 1,000 runs this season, was the man out as Spa reached 29-1 before the washout.

It was a mission achieved for the Seconds as they secured promotion and now face a thrilling title decider at Cookley, who also went up but sit 19 points behind Spa.

A five-wicket win over Bromsgrove at St Peter’s Fields set up next weekend’s cliffhanger as the visitors restricted their opponents to just 116-7 from their 50 overs.

Martin Woodward took 5-33 from 17 overs while 13-year-old Freddie Fallows just missed out on a deserved senior half-century as he dug in to score 49 not out for a youthful visiting side looking very much to the future.

Set 116 to win from 24 overs, Spa reached their target with just four balls to spare – Paul Bryan falling for 45 with just one run needed after James King had earlier made 27.

Bromsgrove gained some revenge when their under-11s beat Droitwich in a thrilling Worcestershire County Board Knock-out Cup final on Sunday by just four runs.

Spa’s seniors also missed out on silverware when they were defeated by Pershore in the Worcestershire Over-45s Cup final.
