LEAGUE leaders Droitwich II battled to a hard-fought 29-22 victory away at Redditch in their final game of the year.
A late try handed the visitors the points after Redditch pegged back Droitwich on three separate occasions at Bromsgrove Road.
The result means Droitwich sit four points clear at the top of the Counties 4 Midlands West (South) table.
Droitwich ran in two unconverted tries in the early exchanges as the league leaders struck on either wing.
However, a Redditch penalty reduced the deficit before a converted try drew the home side level.
The visitors responded straight from the restart as Droitwich reclaimed the lead but were once again unable to add the extras.
Redditch levelled the game before half time as the home side’s forwards dominated at the set-piece.
Droitwich took the lead for a third time after the break from a straight run at the Redditch line.
However, the Kingfishers drew level once again to set up a grandstand finish.
Despite the home side’s best efforts, Droitwich eventually scored the game’s decisive try as the Kingfishers just fell short in their attempts to snatch a draw at the death.
Droitwich are next in action against Trinity Guild on Saturday, January 4 at Segro Park.
