Saltmen boss aiming for top five finish

Droitwich Editorial 20th Jan, 2016 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

DROITWICH SPA joint-manager Wayne Oliver says a top five finish is still his main target despite being league leaders.

The Saltmen currently sit atop the Midland League Division Two table and make the trip to local rivals Fairfield Villa this weekend but boss Oliver does not want to add any extra stress on his squad.

“We have targeted a top five finish so I’m not going to put any pressure on the lads to finish top of the table,” he said.

“The squad is under enough pressure as it is as we’ve got the likes of Chelmsley and Alvis Sporting behind us.

“However, we just want to stick to our target of ending the season in the top five.

“If we hit that target I will absolutely delighted but obviously anything more is a bonus for us.

“However, for us to win the league we will need to win every single game from now until the end of the season and to be honest, I can’t see that happening.”

Oliver takes his side to Villa this with a fully fit squad, however, Mark Burrows and Calum Burleigh remained sidelined with long term injuries.

But despite the fact the Saltmen have already beaten their rivals twice this season, Oliver expects nothing.

“It’s a local derby so everything will go out the window,” he said.

“A lot of the lads play against each other on Sunday’s so they’ll be up for it.

“I have a lot of respect for Paul Oakes (Fairfield’s manager), he never has a bad side and he will be looking forward to the game.

“It’s just a matter of what happens out on the pitch.”
