DROITWICH para-swimmer Rebecca Redfern claimed a silver medal in the women’s SB13 100m breaststroke final in her debut Paralympic Games in Rio.
The 16-year-old, who is also a member of Worcester Swimming Club, claimed a new personal best of one minute 13.81 seconds only to see her world record smashed by 17-year-old Fotimakhon Amilova from Uzbekistan in one minute 12.45 seconds.
Redfern’s silver medal success came after she won her heat earlier in the day in one minute 17.08 seconds and her time in the final stands as a new European record.
She said: “I’m really happy. I came into these games not expecting anything and to come out with something is great.
“I can’t deal with it [winning silver] at the moment. I’m so overwhelmed and it has been an amazing experience.
“Being a youngster I know I have all of these to come. It is a good foundation to start on. I’m going for gold in four years time.”
