DROITWICH Spa Men’s Seconds clinched their first win and cleansheet of the season as they saw off a tricky Wednesbury side 2-0.
Wednesbury is a notoriously a hard place to go, but Spa started strongly and managed to keep the hosts at bay as their confidence grew.
Tommy Ross broke the deadlock when he swept home Andrew Rollason’s pass before Droitwich went further in front. This time, Callum Turner ventured into Wednesbury half and his cross found Ollie Oxley whose first finish gave the home keeper no chance.
There was also a welcomed boost for Spa Men’s Thirds as they lost 2-1 to Stone Thirds. But they had to come from behind as the visitors scored against the run of play.
Stone always looked dangerous on the counter attack, but Spa reverted to a 4-4-3 formation after the break and it paid dividends.
Zak Allsop put the ball home before Spa went ahead following a quickly taken free hit which allowed David Mills to cross for David Mottershead to seal the points.
Meanwhile, Droitwich Men’s Firsts turned in the best performance of the season, but it was not enough to defeat league leaders Stafford, who overcame a 1-0 deficit to run out 3-1 winners.
In the ladies section, Droitwich Firsts hammered Strourport Fifths 5-0, while Spa Seconds were involved in an eight goal thriller against Harbourne.
Spa’s quality told in the first half as Jenny Gauge and Jeeny Cooper converted their chances to give their side a 2-0 advantage.
This sparked a reaction from Harborne who started the second half in brisk fashion and reduced the deficit before equalising soon after.
Droitwich continued to hold their nerve and made it 3-2 with a Gauge strike but the lead was short lived as Harborne levelled terms once more.
Both sides continued to push for a winner and Anna Weston edged Spa ahead with their fourth but Harborne equalised with less than a minute remaining.
Elsewhere, Droitwich Spa Badgers lost 2-0 to Bromsgrove Red.
