Sporting out to topple table-toppers

BROMSGROVE Sporting will have the chance to knock another side off the top of the table when they go up against leaders Uttoxeter tomorrow (Saturday).

The Rouslers, who have gone more than a month without losing, stunned former front runners in Midland Football League Division One Littleton 3-0 last Saturday.

And Paul Smith’s men will be looking for a similar result in Staffordshire tomorrow (Saturday) as they aim to close the gap at the top.

But it was Uttoxeter who were the last team to beat Bromsgrove and the hosts will also be buoyed by their 9-0 trashing of Pelsall Villa last weekend.

Sixth placed Sporting looked on course to get within two points of Uttoxeter as they struck two goals in as many minutes to lead Bolehall Swifts 2-1 on Tuesday night. But the visitors bounced back to take a share of the spoils at the Victoria Ground and end the Rouslers’ run of six straight wins.

Bromsgrove created a number of chances in the opening half an hour, but they could not find a way past Paul Hathaway while they also had an appeal for a penalty turned after Chris Conway appeared to have been pulled down by the Swifts keeper.

The home side then suffered a set back on the 32nd minute when Adam Goodby was first to Jake Bedford’s punch to volley the ball into the unguarded net.

This gave Bolehall the lead at half-time, but two quick-fire goals at the start of the second half turned the match on its head. Firstly, Aaron Daniels slipped the ball past Hathaway before Conway chipped the ball over the Bolehall keeper from close range.

All the momentum was with Sporting and they had chances to extend their lead as Daniels went just wide on two occasions before Conway was disallowed a goal for offside on the 65th minute.

This decision seemed to give the visitors hope as they hit back and got the equaliser through Dave Yonwin after Bromsgrove failed to close down in midfield.

Rouslers almost snatched victory in injury time, but substitute Jozsef Jakab’s header slid agonisingly past the post.
