The Saltmen on the Hunt for glory after reaching County Cup Final

Droitwich Editorial 31st Jan, 2019   0

DROITWICH Spa left it until the 85th minute to snatch a winner that took them through to the County Cup Final, after overcoming Redditch Borough in the semi-final 1-0.

Matty Hunt’s late strike was enough to edge the closely fought contest, in which they were likely the deserved winners of the tie.

Spa were on the ascendancy after a slow start to the game, but could have broken the deadlock if not for two efforts being spurned by Bradley Burgess from promising positions.

Mike Seeley and Hunt went closer still went having headers cleared off the line from set-piece opportunities, whilst Borough’s Jack Albutt tested Spa keeper Matt Oliver with a low near-post drive.

A stagnant second-half didn’t look likely to seeing the opening goal scored, with the cutting edge missing in the final third.

Hunt provided that clinical touch in the final minutes just at the vital time, smashing home from ten-yards after Cory Rudd’s corner had failed to be cleared.

They would see out victory and a passage into the final with ease, taking on Malvern Town Reserves on

Droitwich didn’t have much more defending to do for the remainder of this game, and deservedly took their place in the County Cup Final for the fourth season in a row, when they will take on Malvern Town Reserves.

The final will take place on Saturday 27th April (3pm) at Pershore Town’s Community Stadium, but first return to league action in a visit to Wyrley (2pm).
