Thomas impresses, but Spa's agonies continue in WCL Division Two

A LATE flurry by tailender Phil Thomas proved a rare highlight for Droitwich Spa, as their winless streak continued in Worcestershire County League Division Two.

Spa’s total of 149 was beaten by Cookley’s 150-2 score in the 31st over, which extends the Droitwich losing streak to seven games.

On a slow but flat wicket, Spa batted first, starting well through openers David Huntbatch (14) and Jack Eaton (13) – who put on 30 between them – before losing a host of names including Martyn Davies (8), Paul Bryan (3), captain Max Young (17) and Kieran Wilkins (14) to sink to 110-9.

The introduction of Thomas (48) at number nine helped kick Droitwich back into life, hitting four sixes and coming narrowly close to a century before being the final wicket to fall with five overs remaining.

Dan Soley skittled out five Droitwich batters for 29 conceded, whilst Cookley captain Jonathan Stanaway (3-21) also impressed.

In reply, Cookley blew away the visitors, with openers Jamie Brighton (78no) and Matthew Holloway (49) taking full advantage of the poor seam bowling by Spa.

Davies managed to take two wickets for 32 runs conceded from the ten overs he served, but it was never likely to threaten the hosts – who cruised to victory with 20 overs remaining.

The result leaves Droitwich bottom of the table after relegation rivals Bredon’s win over Coombs Wood, a situation that Spa look to rectify when hosting Oldswinford & Stourbridge Social on Saturday (1pm).
