IT IS set to be a winner-takes-all clash at St Peter’s Playing Fields this weekend, as leaders Droitwich Spa take on Ombersley’s second XI to decide who wins the Worcestershire League Division One title.
Currently, just seven points separate the two sides and with promotion to the Premier Division already secured for both, it is now a question of where silverware will be heading this term.
With Spa faltering in recent weeks, losing by 110 runs last time out at Lye where they were largely second best, and overseeing two abandoned matches before that, it is going to take a huge show of character from Max Young’s troops to see Droitwich’s title charge over the line.
With the Stourbridge Road hosts batting first, Spa struggled to contain Gurpreet Singh (14) and Kamran Mehram (43) who combined for 94 runs after opener Nadeem Hussain (44) had helped set the tone.
Unbeaten pair Nasar Ali (49, no) and Wajid Hussain (13, no) then saw the job through as Lye finished on a 247-7 score, with the efforts of Jake Young (3-70) and Adam Keen (2-36) not enough to cause the hosts too many problems.
A strong start by Max (45) and Jake Young (15) saw an opening partnership of 51, but the innings quickly descended from there for Droitwich – much in part to Waqas Ahmed’s sensational six-wicket haul and four dismissals from Wajid Hussain (4-20).
