Victory for Villa away at Knowle

ON-FIRE Fairfield Villa picked up from where they left off in March as they saw off a strong challenge from Knowle with a 3-2 victory last Saturday.

The Bromsgrove side received the team of the month award after four straight wins in the Midland Football League Division Two.

And they opened up April with another three points as a Jak Albutt strike and a John Pykett brace saw them to victory.

Knowle did push them hard, though, as they were level at half-time and scored late on to set up a tense finale.

Looking to stretch their winning run to five games, Fairfield burst out of the blocks and should have been at least 2-0 in front, but some slack finishing saw them squander their chances.

The Warwickshire side also made them pay for it as they opened the scoring against the run of play with a superb first-time volley from Roz Kane.

The visitors gained in confidence and but for some fine keeping from Chris Mole, who pulled off a superb save from a close range header, they should have been further ahead.

Mole’s efforts were then rewarded as they earned a free kick, which Pykett dispatched into the corner and levelled the game with five minutes to go before the break.

The match was turning into an entertaining affair and so it proved in the second half as Connor Collins and Pykett went close.

Collins has been scoring on a regular basis this season, but he appeared to be having an off day as he somehow put the ball over the bar from four yards out.

Fortunately for Fairfield, they had Pykett to turn to who produced another moment of magic on the 52nd minute. He fired home a free kick to put his side 2-1 in front.

Pykett then turned provider for Villa’s third as he delivered a corner which was met by the head of Albutt who steered it past the keeper.

This should have sealed the points, but Knowle were not finished yet and following a series of mistakes, they got back into the match with a goal from Matt Botley. The away side continued to battle, but Fairfield clung on to secure a hard earned victory.
