Williams ready to fill Mahon's shoes

AARON Williams could be the man to fill the “massive hole” at Bromsgrove Sporting left by the injured Ryan Mahon, according to manager Paul Smith.

The Rouslers were rocked after it emerged Mahon sustained knee ligament damage during a Sunday League match, which could prove to be a career-ending injury.

Smith admitted the central midfielder’s absence was a big contributing factor to their poor run of form last month, including back-to-back defeats in the Midland Football League Division One.

However, since then Bromsgrove have clinched five successive victories to keep their promotion hopes alive and Smith believes this was down to the impact of Williams.

The 19-year-old was part of Sporting’s squad at the start of the season before making the move to Leeds where he goes to university.

But the battling midfielder has returned to the Rouslers which Smith said was a big boost to his side as they look to keep the pressure on leaders Highgate United.

“Ryan (Mahon) left a massive whole,” Smith said. “We were looking like we were missing Ryan as we were missing that character and that get up and go. He closed things down, snapped and raced and we looked like we were missing that.

“So I then went out looking for bits and pieces and then Aaron contacted me out of the blue and said ‘Smudge I am back from university do you need me’ and it was a big shot in the arm for myself and the players.

“He has come in, played the last three games and it is no coincidence that we have won them. I thought he was immense on Monday.”

Sporting will now have to wait until next Tuesday before they can get their league campaign back underway with a home clash against Stafford Town, which has angered Smith.

“The way the league pans out we have not got a game on Saturday, which is frustrating,” he added. “We have then got three Tuesday night games on the spin, so it seems a bit odd to have a free Saturday this late in the season.

“But there you go – that’s the hand we have been dealt and we better get on with it.”
