Young claims top Worcestershire cricket award

DROITWICH Spa Cricket Club are hopeful of keeping hold of prize asset Max Young after he was named Player of the Season at the Worcestershrie Cricket League awards.

Young received the prestigeous prize from former New Zealand all-rounder and TV commentator, Jeremy Coney, at the special ceremony in Stourport last Friday.

The award comes after he hit 854 runs and claimed 42 wickets last season as Spa went from relegation candidates in the previous campaign to title contenders in the Premier Division.

Droitwich captain Martyn Davies said he expected Young to attract offers from other clubs, but he told The Standard the homegrown ace was keen to stay.

“We have relied on him quite a bit over the last couple of years,” Davies said. “He gets a bit of stick because he had a really good season in 2013, which we make reference to quite a bit, but to be fair to him he has topped that and he has been a key player for us and it would be no surprise if he gets a number of offers this winter to go elsewhere.

“But I think he will stay as he loves playing for the club. He is a club man so we expect him to be here next year.”

Young has also recently been awarded Player of the Season and Most Runs at the Droitwich Cricket Club awards night and Davies said was delighted to see him play so well.

“Previous captains didn’t really give him the chance to bowl much,” he said.

“It was something I was keen to do as he gets good shape on the ball and thankfully for me he has paid me back.”
