Young Droitwich boxers earn impressive victories

Droitwich Editorial 16th Dec, 2016   0

TWO DROITWICH boxing academy fighters went the distance to record impressive victories.

Sian O’Toole made the long haul to Bridlington in Yorkshire but the trek proved very rewarding as she secured her second national title in impressive style.

The 17-year-old defeated Beth Warne from Devonport Boxing Club in Plymouth to take the NABGC title in the 57kg category and gain sweet revenge for a split decision defeat against the same opponent only a month earlier.

After a tough opening round fought at close-quarters, O’Toole found her range and successfully kept Warne at arms length for the rest of the content as she repeatedly caught her with scoring punches to win by a unanimous points decision.

And there was more boxing joy for the town when Joe Doyle recorded an impressive victory against Welsh national champion Egon Algieri in his opening bout of the season and debut in the 40kg category.

In Doyle’s first serous fight since returning with a gold medal from the prestigious Monkstown International Box Cup in Ireland this summer, the Spa boxer dominated from the first bell and completely overwhelmed Algieri with a fierce opening onslaught of body punches.

A series of punishing head shots all scored favourably for Doyle in the subsequent rounds as the 14-year-old won the bout comfortably on each judge’s score card to get his 2016/17 campaign off to a perfect start.
