Young swimmers set for Olympic venue

A GROUP of promising young swimmers from Droitwich are set to follow in the footsteps of Olympians Michael Phelps and Rebecca Adlington later this month.

The duo clinched a host of medals at the London Aquatic Centre in 2012 and this Olympic venue will be where 13 talented Droitwich High School students will compete.

The opportunity comes after the school took 17 swimmers to the West Midlands regional round of the ESSA Secondary Schools’ Team Championship at Malvern College last month.

Anja Kristy, Erin Huxley, Elize Smith, Abi Peart, Ellen Harris, Immy Park, Jenny Gearey, Grace Dean, Tom Dean, Rob Latta, Rebecca Redfern, Matt Redfern and Becky Hadley were among the 30 fastest in each division and will now head to London for the national finals on November 21.

However, the best collective performance went to the senior girls which included Rebecca Redfern, Rebecca Hadley, Sammy Gearey, Sophie Groves and Ruth Hadley.

The quintet came a close second in the freestyle relay and won the medley relay by a clear two seconds to secure their place in the national finals. They were also ranked 15th and 25th respectively out of 130 teams.

David Izod, of Droitwich High School, said: “Everyone at the school is rightly proud of the girls and wish them the very best of luck for the finals.”
