Audience in pieces at Jigsaw's dynamic Dick Whittington

Droitwich Editorial 13th Dec, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016

THE JIGSAW Players certainly put the ‘wit’ in Dick Whittington when the group performed its annual pantomime at The Trinity Centre in Lickey.

All of the cast members played their part, including Sophie Holmes as a dynamic Dick Whittington, Sarah Townsend as the hapless and comical Idle Jack and Maggie Stone as a wonderfully evil Queen Rat – she generated plenty of boos and hisses from a lively audience each time she appeared on stage.

She worked the crowd fantastically well throughout, as did Dave Clinton as a great Alderman Fitzwarren.

Other sound performances came from Amy Johnson as Tommy the cat and Luke McLinden who was perfect as the posh and pompous Captain Slog.

All good pantomimes have a great dame at the centre and The Jigsaw’s festive play was no exception.

The role is traditionally taken by a man, but on this occasion it was a woman who rose to the challenge.

Tracey Goult got plenty of laughs as Sarah Stewpot in a production which provided plenty of festive fun for all the family.

There were brilliantly-timed one-liners in abundance in the show, especially in the scene where Idle Jack mans Alderman Fitzwarren’s shop. They just kept coming one after another, hardly leaving space for the laughs (and appreciative groans) in between each one.

Another super scene was the one just before the interval, featuring the songs from Frozen and involving Anna and Olaf. That had the younger audience members sitting up (and some of them on their feet) as they tried to catch a glimpse of the much-loved characters from the Disney film which has already become an institution.

And with the pantomime camel, the lively crowd’s responses and them singing along in full voice to the musical numbers – with help from the songsheets strategically placed on the seats before the performance started – this show has certainly helped get the festive season in full swing.

The Jigsaw Players definitely had all the right pieces in all the right places when it put on this fantastic pre-Christmas panto.
