Hanbury Hall to shed light on the 1715 general election

AS THE dust settles on the general election, visitors to Hanbury Hall will be able to Vote Vernon over the bank holiday weekend and find out about a poll which happened 300 years ago.

The National Trust has been celebrating the 300th anniversary of the 1715 general election with an event perfect for those who are missing all that pre-vote hype and fever.

In 1715, there was one of the first modern Parliaments formed and Thomas Vernon, who built at Hanbury Hall, was elected as the MP for Worcestershire.

There was something strangely spooky about the 1715 campaign, which featured the Scotland debate, national debt and war.

On Sunday (May 24), visitors will be able to see a re-enacted hustings and heckle Thomas Vernon and John Pakington at as they try to win vote ahead of the 1715 election.

Male visitors will be able to vote for the Whigs or the Tories and women, who were unable to vote back then, will be able to try to sway their partners which way to vote.

Those who go along will be able to view two original campaign posters that belonged to Thomas Vernon.

The day will also enable people to find out more about Thomas Vernon and see what Europe was like then – from a map in the dining room.

Hanbury is open seven days a week from 11am to 5pm and access to the house, through taster tours only, is from 11am to 1pm.

Tickets are on a first come, first serve basis. Normal admission prices apply (free to National Trust members) and there is a small additional charge for children’s activities.
