A Roman-era artefact has been uncovered in Worcestershire, which helps to shed some new light on human history within the area. The discovery is said to have been extraordinary, and is a finely carved box made out of bone. It’s said to date back to the Roman period.

The Find Was Made at Milestone Ground

The find was uncovered at Milestone Ground, which is a site that has around 8,000 years of human activity. The excavation produced material from Roman and Saxon periods, with archeologists saying that the box is remarkable.

The find is said to offer a lot of insight into Roman burial practices, as well as belief systems in the Cotswolds. The intricate design and the more unusual materials used also indicate that it may hold some ritual significance. Worcestershire Archaeology, which is a service run by the Worcestershire County Council, carried out the excavation, and they also made sure that the historically significant remains were preserved before beginning the project. The discovery has also attracted national attention, with the attraction itself featured on the BBC’s Digging for Britain. Professor Alice Roberts runs the programme and showcases a lot of the more important finds, including the iconic bone box.

The show is a hit with fans of the Roman era, and as time goes on, it seems that more and more people are now starting to see the appeal. Museums across the country are also seeing a spike in viewers when hosting Roman exhibits, and with discoveries like this helping Worcester to cement itself as an archaeological site for Roman discoveries, it’s certainly a positive movement for the local community. As time goes on, it wouldn’t be surprising to see even more discoveries unearthed.

The UK’s Love for the Roman Era

The find has drawn attention from people all across the UK, and when you look at the spike in interest regarding Roman history, it’s not surprising to see that it’s such a big discovery. The media has also helped to spur people’s interest in history, especially with shows like Spartacus: House of Ashur. A BBC drama dubbed the greatest show of all time is also now airing on Amazon Prime Video. The TV show Rome aired for two seasons and was a collaboration between HBO and the BBC.

Music is also helping to raise awareness of the Roman era. Ex Deo focused their work entirely on the Roman Empire, covering rulers that included Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian. In iGaming, Rome is also a prominent theme. Jackpot casino titles like Apollo Power are focused on the Roman god Apollo, who is also big in Greek mythology. He’s a key figure in Roman culture, with the title featuring mythical symbols, ancient architecture, and a soundtrack that pays homage to the era.

With modern media helping to put a spotlight on the Roman era, and with so much awareness raised about the time and the events that happened, it’s no surprise to see discoveries like this cause such shockwaves through the UK.
