Get composting to reduce waste says County Council

WORCESTERSHIRE are being encouraged to consider home composting to help reduce items going into waste.

The use of a home compost bin diverts approximately 150 kgs of waste per household annually, according to Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and International Compost Action Week aims to tackle that statistic.

To celebrate the week, Worcestershire County Council, in partnership with GetComposting, is providing residents a chance to purchase a discounted composter.

Since starting to work with GetComposting in 2010, the county council has sold nearly 20,000 compost bins and saved nearly £2 million in disposal costs.

Councillor Richard Morris, cabinet member for environment at the council said: “More than 30% of the average household waste can be composted and although many households already compost at home, we want others to get involved.

“This is a great incentive to encourage more residents to get composting.

“Home composting organic waste also helps to significantly reduce carbon emissions and can also be used as an effective and sustainable waste management method to reduce the amount of waste sent for disposal.”
