Oliver: I cannot deny my lads promotion

DROITWICH Spa joint-boss Wayne Oliver insists he cannot deny his squad promotion should they finish in the top two come the end of the season.

The Saltmen currently sit second in the Midland League Division Two table but face stiff competition from Rostance Edwards, Chelmsley Town and Alvis Sporting Club for the two promotion spots.

Oliver told the Standard  in January his target for the club was a top five finish, a month later, he believes gaining promotion is a real possibility for his side.

“If we finish in the top two I am not going to deny my bunch of players from playing at a higher level,” he said.

“This is something we have spoken about for a while but its all about getting promotion and giving the lads the opportunity to play in the next division.

“However, we could be 12 months away from getting promotion as we don’t know how this season is going to turn out.

“On the contrary, if we do get offered promotion this season, I’ll be taking it, the games against Bromsgrove Sporting, Studley and Pershore Town would be massive for the club.

“Obviously we have to get there first.”

Oliver takes his side to Hampton this weekend looking to continue on from their 4-0 victory over neighbours Barnt Green Spartak in the quarter-finals of the Presidents Cup.

The previous meeting between the two sides came at the start of the season down at the King George Playing Fields where the Saltmen romped to a 6-1 victory.

Yet Oliver insists his squad will face a much sterner test against tenth place Hampton.

“They have a small pitch so it will be a totally different experience,” he said.

“The pressure is on us to get the three points and we will be looking to get back on track.

“The win over Barnt Green in the cup was pleasing as we actually took our chances, the total opposite of what we did in the league game against them a fortnight ago.

“Our second half performance tailed off a little but hopefully we can improve on that this weekend.”

Droitwich are offering free travel for supporters this weekend and have urged fans to get in touch via the club’s Twitter or Facebook as spaces are limited.

Fans wishing to attend will be collected from outside Portofino’s on Queen Street, Droitwich at 1.45pm.
